About the Book Various racial groups living in close proximity and contributing to intricate social and cultural patterns have made Assam a land of great diversity.

Its topography, a mixture of hills and plains, is equally varied. It has a rich and varied tradition of art, folk dance and oral literature, and celebrates through out the year many fairs and festival, the best known of which is Bihu. A few miles to the north of Shillong, the chief town of the Province of Assam, there is a fertile and pleasant hill known as the Hill of Raitong, which is one of the most famous spots in ancient folk-lore, and for which is claimed the distinction of being the place where the custom of suttee—wife-sacrifice of the Hindus—originated.

About the Book Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, ‘The Seven Sisters’, as they are called, constitute the North-East, The chief tribal region of India. From flora and fauna to food, dance, Language and festivals—each of these States boasts of its distinct tradition and folklore.

Yet, there is an underlying cultural closeness which binds them. Lakshminath Bezbarua (Assamese: [lɔkʰminatʰ bɛzbɔɹuwa], 14 October – 26 March ), was an Indian poet, novelist and playwright of modern Assamese was one of the literary stalwarts of the Jonaki Era, the age of romanticism in Assamese literature when through his essays, plays, fiction, poetry and satires, he gave a new impetus to the then stagnating Assamese.

Folk tales of Assam. Delhi, Sterling Publishers [] (OCoLC) Document Type: Book. Historian Arupjyoti Saikia’s biography of the Brahmaputra reimagines the layered history of Assam with the unquiet river at the centre. The book combines a range of disciplinary scholarship to unravel the geological forces as well as human endeavour which have shaped the river into what it is today.

This book is a result of the author’s fascination with Assamese folktales and he brings to fore two issues – how women are represented in the world of Assamese folktales, and how the tales sometimes seem to question the givens of caste and class hierarchy in society.

Zerifa Wahid, 36, a popular actor in Assam, has never had the chance to play the role of a typical mother, let alone a devilish psychopathic step-mother writhing in murderous jealousy.

When Wahid read the script of Kothanodi (The River of Fables), a multi-narrative film which knits together four shades of motherhood derived from Assam's Continue reading "Once upon a Time in Assam". The folklore of Assam is rich and varied and its vast store of folktales shows mat the people of Assam have a genuine talent for narrative.

The folktales are full of dramatic situations. The folktales of Manipur are bold and outspoken, because the people are themselves hearty and simple souls, headstrong and uncouth at times, but always Author: Bhaskar Roy Barman.

But, in tug of war, the elephant's nose had become really long! Angry, the elephant sucked all the water from the river.

Then, he sucked some mud and sprayed it on the crocodile and the toad. Since then, it is said, elephants have had long trunks, and crocodiles and toads are not bright green anymore.
